Podiatry Care for Thick Painful Toenails

Thick toenails can become uncomfortable inside shoes and difficult to trim. The nail may turn yellow, brown, or white. It can develop ridges, crumble at the edges, or lift away from the skin beneath it. A  fungal toenail infection is one possible cause. The fungus grows in warm, moist places and can enter through a crack in the nail or skin. Thickening can also result from repeated pressure, an earlier injury, or psoriasis, which is a condition that causes inflamed, scaly skin. Some patients notice little discomfort at first, but the nail can press against the shoe and cause pain while walking.

A thick toenail does not always mean that fungus is present. Aging, poor circulation, and long-term health conditions can also change nail growth. For this reason, an accurate diagnosis is important before treatment begins. A podiatrist can examine the nail, surrounding skin, and toes. A nail clipping or sample from beneath the nail can be tested for fungus. The examination can reveal pressure from a poorly fitting shoe or signs of another foot problem. Patients with diabetes or reduced circulation should seek prompt care because even a minor nail injury can raise the risk of infection.

Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the thickening. A podiatrist can safely trim and thin the nail to reduce pressure and make shoes more comfortable. Care for a fungal infection includes a treatment plan based on test results and the patient's health. Because toenails grow slowly, improvement can take several months and follow-up visits can help track progress. A podiatrist may also suggest roomier shoes, protective padding, or professional nail care. In severe cases, removing part or all of the damaged nail may be considered. Prompt attention can prevent increased pain, skin irritation, and difficulty with walking. If you have developed thick toenails that are causing discomfort, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. Symptoms

  • Warped or oddly shaped nails
  • Yellowish nails
  • Loose/separated nail
  • Buildup of bits and pieces of nail fragments under the nail
  • Brittle, broken, thickened nail

Treatment

If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.

Prevention

In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.

In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.
